Summer is right around the corner (and in the Central Valley, some might argue that it’s already here), so it’s time again to start thinking about your summer eye health! While protecting our skin from the sun is a must, many people forget that protecting our eyes is just as important. Here are three eye protectors that are essential for battling the summer sun:
1. Sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays.
Sunglasses protect our eyes from ultraviolet rays the same way sunscreen protects our skin. Even if you aren’t directly looking into the sun, its rays can still be reflected off of surfaces around you—especially water. Make sure that you are always wearing sunglasses outdoors and that they offer 100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
2. Swimming goggles.
Splashing around in a pool is one of everyone’s favorite summer activities, but the chemicals used in pools can be harsh irritants to your eyes. If you plan on opening your eyes in the water, make sure you are always wearing goggles to protect from the chemicals in pools.
3. Hats! Hats! Hats!
Sometimes wearing sunglasses isn’t enough. UV rays can reach your eyes from the sides or from above your sunglasses. If you aren’t a fan of the wrap-around sunglasses design, make sure to wear a hat whenever you’re outside. Even this simple and obvious tip can go a long way when it comes to your eye health.
While the summer season is one many people look forward to, it’s important to stay mindful that the sun is just as damaging as it is welcoming.
