EYE-Q Vision Care is proud to welcome Thomas Shute, M.D. to its diverse and experienced team of eye care specialists. A Clovis native, Dr. Shute was born and bred in the Central Valley and returns home to continue a long family legacy of providing the best care to the community. Dr. Shute joins EYE-Q as a fellowship-trained cataract and glaucoma specialist and is a fourth-generation eye care provider in the Central Valley.
“I came home to the Central Valley because I have something unique to offer a place I love. I spent years learning and teaching the most advanced glaucoma and cataract surgery techniques at one of the world’s leading institutions,” said Dr. Shute. “I believe Central Californians deserve the best medical and surgical care available, and I want to help change the perception that we have to drive three hours to get it. This is my home, these are my people, and I have a valuable service I can provide our community.”
Prior to completing his medical degree at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Shute started right here in the Central Valley, graduating from San Joaquin Memorial High School before joining the Leon S. Peters Honors Program at Fresno City College. He went on to complete both his Bachelor of Science degree and his Master of Science degree at the University of California, San Diego.
After interning for the Travis Air Force Base, Dr. Shute served four years as a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon before completing his ophthalmology residency and fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis.
“Ophthalmology is one of the few fields in medicine that allows a physician to have a very tangible effect on a patient’s quality of life. The opportunity to optimize or restore someone’s vision occurs every day in our field, and the positive impact we can have is enormous,” said Dr. Shute. “I chose to practice at EYE-Q because I felt a real sense of community here. I wanted to be surrounded by colleagues who are as dedicated as I am to providing world class care to everyone who walks through our doors.”
Being back in the Central Valley doesn’t just mean serving his community. Dr. Shute is also looking forward to spending time with his family, attending Fresno State athletic events, and of course, tacos and tri-tip sandwiches.
