5 Tips to Get Your Eyes Summer Ready

Posted on

As summer approaches and preparation begins, do not forget to plan for your eyes as well. Here are some tips to keep your eyes happy this summer:

  • Avoid getting “sunburn of the eye”
Photokeratitis is like having a sunburned eye. It can be caused by sunlight shining off of highly reflective surfaces into your eye. If you are spending time near water this summer, be sure to wear sunglasses marked with “100% UV protection.”
  • Prevent “swimmer’s eye”
Chemicals used in pools to keep them clean are harsh on the eyes. For example, chlorine affects the natural tear film and leaves you with blurry vision and red, gritty eyes. Wear swim goggles while you are in the pool and splash your closed eyes with fresh water after exiting the pool.
  • Prevent dry eyes
Dry eye may occur when it is hot, dry, or windy and affects your eye’s tear film. To combat dry eye, wear wrap-around sunglasses for maximum protection. You could also use artificial tears (preferably preservative-free) to keep your eyes moist.
  • Eye safety
Summer usually means spending more time outdoors. Whether it is for work or play, wear the proper protective eye wear.
  • Quit smoking
It is always the right time to quit smoking. In addition to being bad for your lungs, smoking worsens dry eyes and is a risk factor for eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, and more.
