Cloudy Vision

What is cloudy vision? Cloudy vision is eyesight that is foggy or hazy and can range from a mild fog to clouding your entire view. Blurry vision is similar, but not the same. Blurry vision is eyesight that looks “soft” or out of focus.

Some conditions can cause cloudy vision and blurry vision at the same time. Cloudy vision is a symptom of another condition. Common causes of cloudy vision include:

  • Cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens that leads to cloudy vision.
  • Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) – also called “secondary cataract” because it can occur after cataract surgery. The new artificial lens, called intraocular lens (IOL), doesn’t become cloudy, but the capsule that surrounds the IOL becomes cloudy.
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – Damage to the eye’s macula that leads to a gradual loss of the vision in the center of your view.
  • Dry Eye – Dryness to the eyes from quicker than normal evaporation of the tears or from hardening of the oils in the glands located in the eyelids. This can cause dry patches, fluctuating vision with blinks, or clouding from the surface of the eye becoming rough.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy – Retinopathy tends to happen when diabetes isn’t being managed properly. Damage to the retina of the eye may be caused by leaking blood vessels or swelling and may also cause clouding of the vision.
  • Contact Lenses – Wearing contacts can lead to cloudy vision due to dry spots, cracks, and tears in the lenses.
  • Fuchs’ Dystrophy – Cells in the corneal layer, called the endothelium, gradually die off. These cells pump fluid from the cornea to keep it clear. If they die off, fluid builds up and the cornea gets puffy and swollen causing cloudy vision.

An eye doctor will have to diagnose the problem since cloudy vision can be an underlying symptom of a bigger issue.

If you have cataracts, the only option to reduce cloudy vision is cataract surgery.

Monitoring blood glucose and/or lifestyle changes may help reduce cloudy vision caused by diabetic retinopathy.
