Eye Dilation

Posted on

You just had a comprehensive eye exam and had your eyes dilated. Here is what you should know:

  • Don’t hang out in the sun: Never look directly at the sun as it can damage your eyes. After dilation, this is even more important to remember. Normally, your pupils will automatically adjust (get smaller) in sunlight to make UV damage less likely. But after your eyes are dilated, your eyes can no longer automatically adjust to protect themselves, raising the risk of UV damage.
  • Don’t stare at digital screens: Electronic screens can contribute to digital eye strain. Until your pupils return to normal after dilation, limit your screen time to avoid discomfort.
  • Don’t try to read small fonts: While it is possible to read small text in a book or on your phone, the affect to see clearly at this time could cause eye strain, fatigue and headaches.

Be prepared

Once your eyes are fully dilated, the effects will last four to six hours. Here are some steps you can take to ease discomfort:

  • Having a loved one drive you home after your appointment
  • Wearing sunglasses if you spend any time outside and on the ride home
  • Limiting your time in the sun as much as possible
  • Dimming the brightness of your digital screens as much as possible
  • Using reading glasses while your pupils are dilated

While eye dilation may seem inconvenient, it is an important part of your eye exam and vital to understanding the health of your eyes. Learn more at https://www.healthline.com/health/how-long-does-eye-dilation-last
